CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - The Big South Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has adopted Samaritan's Feet as its Community Service Challenge for the 2009-10 season, and has set a Conference-wide goal of collecting 17,000 pairs of shoes.  The Big South member institution's SAAC that collects the most shoes for the initiative will be deemed Kallander Cup champion for 2009-10.

During the 2009-10 season, each Big South member institution's SAAC will collect new shoes (athletic shoes only), with an emphasis on children's sizes 11-4, at various on-campus athletic events and Conference championships throughout the year.  Monetary donations will also be accepted, as a $5 donation equals one pair of shoes.  Beginning in January, a texting program will be unveiled that will be generated into $5 donations each time a school-specific "key word" is texted at an event to a provided number.

In addition, Big South coaches will be involved in the "Barefoot for Bare Feet" campaign, as various coaches from each sport will go barefoot at specified games, and perhaps team practices or media interviews, to raise awareness for Samaritan's Feet.  Presbyterian College head football coach Harold Nichols ran his team onto the field barefoot for the Blue Hose's Oct. 24 Homecoming game against VMI.  The Big South's men's and women's basketball coaches will all coach barefoot later this season on a designated "Barefoot for Bare Feet" Conference weekend.

"We are so excited that the Big South is partnering with Samaritan's Feet," said Manny Ohonme, President and Founder of Samaritan's Feet.  "These students, faculty and coaches are using their platforms to provide a voice for the voiceless around the world.  I look forward to seeing the fruits of their labor by impacting children they will never meet."

"We are really excited about helping Samaritan's Feet," added Big South SAAC President Matt Horn, who is a member of the Winthrop University men's soccer team.  "Listening to the reactions of children getting shoes for the first time - something we take for granted every day - gives you a great feeling.  Hearing about how much pleasure these children have when receiving just a pair of shoes is uplifting.  We also plan to create awareness for Samaritan's Feet, as well as use their model, to help kids locally near our own campuses."

The Big South SAAC created the Kallander Cup in 2006-07 to engage student-athletes from all Big South member institutions in a year-long fundraising competition for the benefit of a selected charity.  Liberty (2006-07, 2007-08) and Winthrop (2008-09) are the past Kallander Cup champions.
