BISHOP DWENGER HIGH SCHOOL REACHES OUT TO IMPOVERISHED CHILDREN!
Students, teachers, faculty and friends of Bishop Dwenger High School in Ft. Wayne, Indiana have generously raised 200 pairs of new shoes and $1,300 for Samaritan's Feet! Under the direction of Melissa Roberts, the school's Social Justice Club organized a shoe and fund drive which will allow Samaritan's Feet to send nearly 500 pairs of shoes to Liberia, Africa.
The shoes raised by the students are scheduled for departure to Liberia next week. Samaritan's Feet partners in Liberia are organizing a shoe distribution to coincide with Christmas, 2009. Photos from the distribution in Liberia will be shared with students and faculty so they can directly see the impact of their efforts.
On October 19th, Samaritan's Feet Founder Manny Ohonme accepted the new shoes at a special assembly held at Bishop Dwenger. Manny shared with the students his humble beginnings growing up in Nigeria, receiving only one meal a day and not owning a pair of shoes until he was given his first pair as a gift at the age of 9 from an American missionary. Manny thanked the students for their self-less efforts towards those they will never meet, but who will greatly benefit from their generosity.
A representative from Ft. Wayne Mayor Tom Henry's Office was also present at the assembly, declaring Monday, October 19th 'Bishop Dwenger High School-Samaritan's Feet Day', in honor of the students' efforts to improve the lives of children living in poverty.
Principal J. Fred Tone challenged the students to individually do their part to continue this partnership with Samaritan's Feet. In response to Mr. Tone's call to action, Bishop Dwenger High School students and faculty are already planning numerous upcoming barefoot events and fundraising initiatives.
