Story by Beth Parker
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. - They lined up early Monday morning-- even before the doors opened. They were waiting in line for a bit of hope.
The non-profit Samaritan's Feet visited a church in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County today. The group gives out free sneakers in poor neighborhoods.
At Rising Hope United Methodist Mission Church, Pastor Keary Kincannon knows about 70 percent of the people the church's Hybla Valley neighborhood live below the poverty line. He says Samaritan's Feet is "love in action."
J Rollins of Samaritan's Walk says this really is what Jesus would do.
"When you see a naked person, you should clothe them," said Rollins. "When you see a hungry person, you should feed them. And when you see a tired person, you should comfort them. And when you do that for the least among us, you do it for Him."
Each child's feet are washed. Then, they are fitted for new shoes. All of the shoes are donated. Sometimes by individuals, but also by shoe manufacturers, even professional athletes.
When you hand over a pair of shoes, it's more than what it seems. In fact, sometimes it'll save a life. The World Health Organization says that about 10,000 children die every day of some type of foot-borne disease, injury or related infection.
The goal is to give out 10 million shoes in 10 years. Samaritan's Feet needs volunteers and donations. They have lots of shoes, now they need to get them to those in need around the world.
