CHARLOTTE, NC, September 21, 2009 –Samaritan's Feet seeks to raise $50,000 at its annual Charity Golf Tournament. Celebrities, corporate partners, Samaritan's Feet Board members and Founder, Manny Ohonme, will tee off on Monday, October 26, 2009 at the Emerald Lake Golf Course in Matthews, NC.
There are 300 million children who go without shoes every day. Walking, for most of them, is their only mode of transportation. As a result, they suffer from diseases, infection and many other ailments because they don’t have shoes to wear. That’s why Samaritan’s Feet President and Founder, Emmanuel (Manny) Ohonme, who didn’t have shoes until the age of 9 years old, started the organization: to pay it forward to what he was given, his first pair of shoes.
Manny received his first pair of shoes from a missionary, who also taught him how to play basketball. These shoes allowed him to run and play without getting hurt and helped him get better at sports, specifically basketball.
Six years ago, Ohonme, originally from Nigeria, left a lucrative marketing and supply chain job to start Samaritan’s Feet (
www.samaritansfeet.org), a 501c3 organization whose goal is to put 10 million pairs of shoes on children’s feet in 10 years around the world.
To date, nearly 2.5 million pairs of shoes have been collected for children around the world.
“I am thrilled to be hosting our sixth annual golf tournament,” said Ohonme, who came over to the US on a basketball scholarship from the University of North Dakota - Lake Region. “Our partners, Bojangles’, Red Rocks and many others are helping us to put 20,000 pairs of shoes on the feet of impoverished families.”
Foursome teams are available for the October 26, 2009 tournament at $500.00 per team. The tournament will begin at 12:30 PM with a shotgun start. Bronze, Silver and Gold sponsorships are available at $1,000, $2,000 & $5,000 respectively and hole sponsorships are available for $100. Furthermore, individuals can golf for $150.
A wide range of trophies and prizes will be awarded. Golfers will also participate in hole-in-one, closest-to-the-pin, long drive, and putting contests. Lunch will be provided by Bojangles’ and dinner will be provided by Red Rocks.
