Coach Saul Phillips coaching ‘Barefoot for Bare Feet’ at Sunday’s NDSU vs. UND game with a lofty goal

Rivalry presents opportunity for a different kind of bragging rights

WHAT:
In an effort to call awareness to the needs of children around the world who don’t have shoes and the opportunities shoes mean, NDSU basketball Coach Saul Phillips will coach “Barefoot for Bare Feet” in the Fargodome on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m., during the rivalry game against UND. Barefoot for Bare Feet is a movement of groups and individuals committed to involving others in accomplishing the goals of the organization known as Samaritan’s Feet.

Organizers hope to raise enough sponsorships and donations to bring 10,000 pairs of shoes and hope to 10,000 children around the world. Samaritan’s Feet founder – and NDSU grad school alum —Manny Ohomne believes that if this lofty goal is possible anywhere, it’s here in North Dakota.

WHEN and WHERE:
More information will be shared at a news conference on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at 10 a.m. at First International Bank & Trust, 3001 25th Street, Fargo, N.D. 58103

WHO:
Individuals providing additional information about goals and how to support the movement include:
• Samaritan’s Feet founder Manny Ohomne
• NDSU men’s basketball coach Saul Phillips
• First International Bank & Trust president Greg Mastrud

BACKGROUND ON SAMARITAN’S FEET AND THE BAREFOOT COACHING MOVEMENT:
For the second consecutive year, Coach Saul Phillips joins more than 1,000 coaches that are coaching in their bare feet to provide a voice for the 300 million children who walk every day in their bare feet. To these kids, a pair of shoes means school, less exposure to disease and a better life.

Before, during and after the game, donations can be made via text, at a booth manned by volunteers during the game or online at tiny.cc/coachphillips. A $10 donation buys one pair of shoes.

Samaritan’s Feet focuses on collecting shoes and funds that allow volunteers to deliver a pair of shoes and a message of hope to children around the world, the same way a good Samaritan from Wisconsin did for Manny, when he received his first pair of shoes as a 9-year old in a village in Africa.
